Stone Eagle
Special Selection

Tasting Notes

Special Selection is the epitome of red wine making at Two Sisters and the most exceptional small lot wine produced only in the best of vintages. It is a thoughtful blend of red grape varieties, intended to capture the synergy of the vintage. The best vineyard sources and the best barrels are chosen to create this wine. The grape varieties are aged individually for a full 3 years in barrel, then carefully blended to reflect the vintage. The final wine is 43% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon. The barrels for the Cabernets were all French oak, with the Merlot seeing about 33% American and 67% French oak. In total two thirds of the barrels were new.

The resulting wine is extraordinary, as the synergy of viticulture and viniculture results in a wine of amazing structure, balance and character. In the glass the wine is deeply coloured, with rich dark tones of garnet. The nose is intense and engaging. Aromas of dark fruits like black currants and blackberries abound, with undertones of pipe tobacco, licorice, eucalyptus and chocolate. The palate is bold, rich, and layered as the flavours interplay with balancing tannins, alcohol and acidity. The ripe blackberry and black currant notes contrast the earthiness and layers of sweet and savory spices. Nuances continue to emerge with time on the palate, as the complexities of the wine reveal themselves. The wine transitions seamlessly into an unrelenting finish that becomes a wonderful conclusion to the enjoyment of this wine.
